Shrine Schools Unified School Board

The Shrine Unified School Board (USB) was established 16 years ago. Its purpose has always been to create policy and oversee recommendations that are consistent with the strategic, long-term planning of the Schools.

Over the years, the USB has assisted in a number of important School efforts from accreditation to construction of the Field House and recently, the New Family Referral program designed as a tuition reduction plan and recruiting tool.

The USB is made up of Parish members, school parents and industry experts. They use their experience to help impact marketing, financial and operational goals. Helping to ensure the sustainability of a Catholic education here at Shrine is the USB’s guide in all its efforts of “Planning for Change.”  Contact the USB:

img_30171Christopher Buchanan
This is Chris’s fifth year on the USB. He welcomed the invitation to join because he wants to stay involved in his children’s educational future at Shrine. He has worked in the automotive business for 17 years, primarily in sales and program management with Tier 1 suppliers. He’s worked abroad in Sweden and Germany and is using his business acumen on the USB’s marketing sub-committee. Chris and his wife, Christine, live with their four children in Royal Oak. Their kids attend Shrine Catholic Grade School and Academy in grades 5, 6, 8 and 10.


Bill Connelly
Bill believes education is an important ministry of the Church and a parish. A retired automotive executive with experience as CEO, COO and CFO in a number of domestic and international operations, last year Bill brought tremendous insight and enthusiasm to his role on the USB’s marketing and finance sub-committees. This is Bill’s fifth year serving on the USB and he is heading the finance committee which will positively affect the school system’s financial health. A graduate of John Carroll University and Case-Western Reserve University, Bill has also served on the boards of many for-profit and non-profit organizations. Bill is a parish member and lives in Birmingham.

Veronica Flynn
This is Veronica’s third year on the USB. She joined the USB to become more involved in the future of Shrine Schools and support the community.  Veronica has been an HR professional for over 12 years. Married to Kevin and has two children in Shrine Schools in 11th and 7th grades and a 2016 Shrine Catholic High School graduate.  Veronica attended 12 years of catholic school and understands the value of its education.

Andrea Knapp
Andrea is currently in her second year on the USB. Andrea is the Media Relations and Content Leader at AAM. Prior to joining AAM, she was the Corporate Media Manager for Delphi Automotive. Andrea has a background in journalism and was a magazine editor for several automotive industry magazines. She served on Shrine’s grade school Parent Advisory Committee for two years. Andrea is currently a member of the marketing committee. Andrea and her husband Nathan live in Royal Oak and have two daughters at the grade school.

This is Marguerite’s second year on the USB. She served on the grade school parent advisory committee for the prior two years and co-chair of the grade school cultural committee.  Marguerite attended Catholic schools 1-12 grade and has a passion for Catholic education and being involved in the continuing development of Shrine’s educational and service outreach to the community. Marguerite and her husband Jim were married at Shrine 20 years ago and share a love for the Shrine community. They have four children and 3 are currently attending Shrine schools.  She graduated from Miami University with a B.S. in Marketing and worked for 14 years with Kelly Services Inc. and Direct Sourcing Solutions. She focused on new business development, customer service, sales and human resources. It is an exciting time to be a part of the USB with the strategic planning process and new evangelization promoting the Catholic spirit and strength of the Shrine campuses and parish life.

Matt Mio
This is Matt’s fourth year on the USB, although he has an additional year of experience with the Marketing/Communications subcommittee. Matt has been “going to school” since 1980 and has always had an interest in Catholic education. Matt has taught at the University of Detroit Mercy for 15 years and is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Matt is dedicated to community service, especially in the area of science literacy. Matt and his wife Leslie are both SCHS 1993 grads, and they live in Berkley. They are proud parents of three boys: Joseph (SCA 7th grade), Lorenzo (SCGS 3rd grade) and Emmet (SCGS PreK4).

Kathleen Moore
Kathy begins her fourth year on the USB after retiring from Oakland University where she served as professor of chemistry and associate dean of arts and sciences. She looks forward to using her knowledge at the collegiate level to help Shrine student be ready for the undergraduate experience. She is eager to help Shrine Schools and their students navigate current national opportunities and challenges in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. Kathy and her husband Jerry live in Royal Oak and have been parish members for 29 years. The Moore’s two daughters are graduates of both Shrine Grade School and High School where they received excellent preparation in all academic areas and emerged well-grounded in their Catholic values.

Kristi Orvis
Kristi begins her fourth year on the USB.  Kristi is a sales account executive at Pandora Internet Radio for the State of Michigan. Prior to joining Pandora, she worked in the radio industry for 18 years, in a similar role. Prior to joining the USB, she was a member of the Parent Advisory Committee for two years and volunteer for various Mother’s Club events. Kristi will be contributing her time to the marketing and communications committees. Kristi and her husband Eric have one son in the sixth grade at Shrine.

Walt Romano
2016-2017 is Walt’s third year on the USB. He applied to be on the USB because he values Catholic education and believes that the educational experience at Shrine should be exceptional. Walt is in his 22nd year in education. His first six were as counselor then principal of Shrine Academy. He has since worked as a counselor in Birmingham Public Schools, currently at Seaholm High School. Walt loves the daily interaction with his students and cherishes the opportunity to bring his experience to the Shrine USB. Walt is a 1982 SHS grad and he and his wife, Cindy, live with their three children in Royal Oak. They have two Shrine Catholic High School graduates (2014 and 2016) and a current 10th grader.

Natalie True
Natalie begins her first year on the USB, second year on the Marketing and Communications Committee and first year on the Catholic Identity Committee.  She’s worked in the marketing and advertising industry for more than 15 years as a writer and currently runs her own copywriting business. Prior to joining the USB, Natalie chaired several Grade School Mothers’ Club committees. While serving on the USB, Natalie will represent the Catholic Identity Committee. Natalie and her husband, Preston have a son, Henry, in the 10th grade at the high school and a daughter, Georgia, in 6th grade at the grade school.

Molly Zink
This is Molly’s second year on USB. As a professional writer and editor, Molly felt that she could lend a hand to the Marketing Committee in crafting and fine tuning marketing messages about Shrine Schools.  She currently works full-time as a proofreader at ES3 and is a college essay coach, helping students from all over Metro Detroit prepare their college application essays. As a parent of two Shrine students and one Shrine alumni, Molly values the Catholic foundation Shrine provides, and the stellar college prep curriculum present from K-12 grades. She credits the Holy Spirit for guiding her to serve on the USB, and values the opportunity to give back to a community which she loves.

If you are interested in becoming a member for the 2015-2016 school year, please contact any member of the current board or either school principal. The USB is looking for members with backgrounds in social media, marketing and branding.  If you have these skills or a passion to better our schools, please consider joining the USB.
