FACT: 90% of the 7th and 8th Grade classes participate in extracurricular clubs or activities.
Shrine Academy has activities, clubs, and school events that are both co-curricular and non-academic.
CYO Athletics: Shrine Academy offers a wide variety of sports in every season for boys and girls of all skill levels. In the past two years, Shrine teams have won the CYO Championship in girls basketball, boys soccer and lacrosse. Please visit http://www.shrinecyo.com for more information.
Student Council: This student-led group is open to all 7th and 8th Graders who chose to join. The groups meet weekly during lunch. Members learn leadership skills by organizing school and service events. Examples of Student Council events include: Food drive for warming shelter, school dances, Christmas tree decorating competition, Christmas service project, Catholic Schools Week, Field Day, etc.
Shrine Junior Honor Society: Open to 8th graders who qualify in terms of Service, Scholarship, and Character. Students create committees to work on service projects that they want to focus on in our school, our church, and in our community. Past service projects have included: Communion buddies with the 2nd graders making their First Communion, a book drive for the Rx for Reading program sponsored by University of Detroit Mercy, the Mitten and Glove Drive, and student-planned fundraising efforts to raise money to buy supplies for Beaumont Children’s Hospital and area homeless shelters.
Music Connection: Open to all students in grades 7 and 8. Students meet one morning a week before school to study choral music of all genres and learn performance practices of choral music from many time periods. This group performs at the Christmas Concert, Catholic Schools Week Concert, Spring Concert and ends the school year traveling and competing in Music In the Parks Music Festival at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.
Announcement Committee: Open to 7th and 8th grade students. These students use the school intercom system to make daily Announcements and lead prayer at 8:00 am, lunch, and at the end of the day.
Yearbook Committee: Open to 7th and 8th grade students. The Yearbook team meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Students are responsible for the production of the annual yearbook, including the copy, layout, and photography. Members of the Yearbook Committee attend school activities and events to take quality photographs to include in the annual.
Robotics: Open to all 7th and 8th grade students. The RoboKnight FIRST Tech Challenge team are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenges. Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and teamwork.
World Language Enrichment: As the calendar permits, the 7th grade attends cultural field trips such as the Ballet Hispanico or Chinese Cultural Center with accompanying lunch out and a visit to the Rivera Murals in the Dia or the Asian art section of the DIA.
“A Christmas Carol” at Meadowbrook Theatre
Every other year the entire Academy student body attends the play “A Christmas Carol” at Meadowbrook Theatre. Students learn how to properly dress for the theatre and theater etiquette. After the play, students eat lunch at local restaurants and learn how to properly tip their server.
Lenten Project
The annual almsgiving project in the Academy collected nearly $1000.00 this year. Students helped Catholic Relief Services serve others in developing countries and in the Metro-Detroit Area through the Lenten Rice Bowl program. Our students are amazing in their generosity to their brothers and sisters who are in need.
Academy Field Day
Held annually at Oakland Yard Athletics. The students enjoy team events such as tug of war and sand volleyball, as well as use the indoor-golf driving range, basketball court, soccer field, ropes course and slip-n-slide.
8th Grade Trip to Washington DC
Each spring, the 8th grade students travel to Washington DC. The students will explore the heart of Capitol Hill, home to the U.S. Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress. They will pay their respects at Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for hundreds of thousands brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in the name of our country. Students will experience the changing of the guard and meet many veterans. They will visit Mount Vernon, US Holocaust Museum, , the Newseum, the National Mall of Smithsonians, the African American Museum, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the war memorials and the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. Students will also attend mass at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Basilica. It is an amazing trip that provides memories for a lifetime. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join us.
7th Grade Camp
The 7th grade class travels to Camp Ozanam for a weekend of camp and faith formation activities each year. This weekend is a wonderful way for our students to gain leadership skills, bond with classmates, and more deeply discover their faith. Many students fondly speak of this weekend as the highlight of their Academy experience.
Board Game Club
Academy Board Game Club: All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are welcome to this fun morning social club where students will learn to play chess, Uno, Sorry!, and other fun board games. Donuts are usually served and students have fun together.
