Juniors Participate in Job Shadow Day

On May 18, 2017 Shrine Catholic High School’s junior students set out for the first ever Junior Job Shadow Day. We had 100% participation and many enthusiastic responses from both students and mentors – the day was a great success. Below are some statistics from the day:

  • 69 students shadowed
  • 65 professional mentors
  • 54 companies across metro-Detroit across
  • 11 career areas (clusters)

This year-long project began in the fall of 2016 when students expanded their use of Naviance – a comprehensive college and career research program. Students completed skills assessments and interest surveys, and researched recommended careers. One-on-one interviews were conducted with every student to identify their top three careers of interest. In many cases, the Shrine community (past and present parents, alumni, friends of Shrine) eagerly partnered with us to provide a day of professional mentorship.

Students returned from their day elated and eager to share their stories – observations of surgical procedures (cesarean section, heart surgeries), participation in a SWAT training exercise, use of cutting-edge virtual reality technology, visit to a construction site, tours of manufacturing facilities (to name a few).

Students not only enjoyed their day beyond the walls of Shrine, but there were many early indications that they clearly saw the value of the experience in helping them better understand a career area they may choose to pursue.

Student Quotes:

Christian Senkowski – “My day was amazing! I got to participate in a SWAT training simulation.”

Olivia Schenkel – “I had a great day. It was fun learning more about what Physical Therapists do and how they help others.”

McKenzie Looney – “We were able go into a real jail cell and met the Honorable Judge Palmer. Having this day really helped me decide that I want to pursue a career in criminology.”

Austin Zuchelkowski – “This was the best school day ever! I learned about virtual reality technology – I got to play on an HTC Vive. I walked on the wing of a flying plane.”

Youngju Jang – “I had the most exciting day! I was able to watch a c-section and see a baby being born. It was incredible!”

Brennan Smith – “I got to see two different heart surgeries.”

Parent Quote:

Beth Zuchelkowski – “I think the first Junior Shadow Day was an unbelievable success! When I asked my boys how it was, I received responses like “amazing,” “great,” and “I learned so much!”
