Shrine High School: Fine and Performing Arts
The Fine and Performing Arts departments at Shrine continue to flourish. The fall 2009 completion of the Sanders Auditorium coupled with the fall 2007 renovation of the visual arts classroom caps Phase II of our Parish’s Master Plan. Shrine Fine Arts Alumni have enjoyed great success in the professional world, including Keegan Michael Key ‘89, MADtv; Katie Else ‘96, singer Riverdance International Tour; Alan Gillespie ’93, Miss Saigon National Tour; Ken Ebaugh ‘85 Michigan Opera Theatre; and Kristen Bell ‘98, screen actress. Each year our performing arts department hosts a Fall Play and Spring Musical.
The spring musical provides an opportunity for all students to participate in many different roles including cast member, pit orchestra, student director, prop master, stage crew, sound and light crew, set-design and publicity. With substantial involvement from over two-thirds of our students, the musical is a highlight of the school year.
Recent productions include Children of Eden, Guys & Dolls, Annie Get Your Gun and Godspell.
Band and Choir
Over one-third of our students actively participate in a variety of musical ensembles. All ensembles provide music for school and community events, private functions, and masses for Shrine Schools and the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish. Shrine also hosts Christmas and spring concerts as well as an all-school talent show. The music department has a history of excellence in providing a well-rounded music curriculum. Our students receive high ratings at District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, as well as District, State, and other Regional Choral and Band Festivals. Goliard women were recently featured at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival as one of the top 14 ensembles. The music department has toured nationally and internationally.
